FRESHMAN YEAR
  • Use the DISCOVER system to research careers and assess your interests.
  • Review your academic program requirements with your adviser.
  • Begin research on internship/co-op opportunities.
  • Explore opportunities for on-campus, part-time and summer jobs on the C.A.$.H. Network.
  • Write resume for for scholarship applications, part-time and summer jobs and internships.
  • Attend job/career fairs both on- and off-campus to make contacts and learn more about employing organizations.
  • Network with professors and other students.
  • Join clubs and major-related organizations.
  • Get help with your studies at the Academic Support Center.
  • Earn a good grade point average.
  • Meet with a counselor in Career Services if you are thinking about changing your major or need to choose one.
  • Start keeping track of your jobs and activities for your resume to have it reviewed.

SOPHOMORE YEAR

  • Search for internship and cooperative education opportunities at www.collegecentral.com/findlay (or click the link on the Career Services homepage).
  • Join clubs and take a leadership role.
  • Work a part-time job or volunteer your time to start getting major-related experience.
  • Write a resume and make an appointment with the ICEP Director
  • Attend job/career fairs both on- and off-campus to make contacts and learn more about employing organizations.
  • Get information from ICEP on how to participate in internship/co-op opportunities and seek additional assistance from other sources as needed.
  • Develop career-preparation goals for the rest of your time at UF.
  • Start your eportfolio.
  • Meet with a counselor in Career Services if you're looking for a different major or thinking about a minor.
  • Research summer employment opportunities.
  • Practice your interviewing skills with the ICEP Director.
  • Secure a co-op, internship, part-time job, summer job or volunteer position to explore your career field and gain experience.
  • Assess your professional skills and strengths, establish skills and experience goals for junior year.

JUNIOR YEAR

  • Update your resume and cover letter.
  • Research graduate and professional schools
  • Secure an internship, co-op, part-time job or volunteer position to gain major-related experience.
  • Continue to network in your field and across fields.
  • Work on interview skills with Career Services
  • Begin agency research if interested in state or federal government employment.
  • Read professional materials, journals, books.
  • Join organizations in your major and attend student conferences in the field.
  • Register to take professional licensure exams (e.g., PRAXIS) or graduate/professional school entrance exams (e.g., GRE, GMAT, LSAT, MCAT).
  • Start planning your senior job search
  • Research employers that interest you for full-time employment.
  • Meet with the Career Services staff to plan your job search strategy for senior year.
  • Buy senior interview suits over the summer.

SENIOR YEAR

  • Make an appointment with Career Placement to start your job search.
  • Complete applications to graduate/professional school in the fall.
  • Purchase interview clothes, if you didn't.
  • Update and polish resume.
  • Write cover letters and customize to different employers.
  • Attend job/career fairs both on- and off-campus to secure employment for after graduation.
  • Practice interview with placement staff and attend Mock Interview Day.
  • Network and keep a list of contacts with their telephone numbers and email addresses.
  • Register on the College Central Network (or click link on the Career Services homepage) to access job listings and apply for positions.
  • Create a professional page on Facebook, Indeed, BranchOut and LinkedIn.  Clear off your site any foul or rude language and inappropriate pictures.
  • Apply for jobs using a variety of sources, the more you use, the more successful you'll be.
  • Be persistent!
