Keynote Speakers Descriptions:

Anna Dewdney
Anna lives in a very old house in Vermont.  Before becoming a popular author/artist of picture books, she was a middle school teacher, school bus driver, a waitress, a mail carrier, and a day-care teacher.  Her many books include Llama Llama Mad at Mama, Nobunny's Perfect, Roly Poly Pangolin, Llama Llama Holiday Drama, Grumpy Gloria and Llama Llama Red Pajama.

Jerry Pinkney
Jerry received the 2010 Caldecott Medal for The Lion and the Mouse.  He also has received the Caldecott Honor five times, the Coretta Scott King Award five times, and four gold and five silver medals from the Society of Illustrators!  His more recent books include The old African, Little Red Hen, Noah's Ark, The Nightingale and Aesop's Fables.

Jim Arnosky
Jim’s mastery at observing and comprehending wildlife permeates his self-illustrated nature books. His dozens of picture books include such titles as Watching Foxes, One Whole Day With Wolves and Otters Under Water. In 2005, he was recognized for his outstanding contributions to children’s science books by the American Association of Science Teachers.

Vincent Di Nguyen
Vincent began and continues to work in filmography. He is an in-house artist at Blue Sky Studios, the folks who brought you Ice Age, Dr. Seuss’ Horton Hears a Who! and Robots. His artistic style is tailor-made for children’s books. You are probably familiar with some of his very popular books, some of which are Jungle Bullies, Gorilla Garage, Little Britches and the Rattlers and The Truly Terrible Horrible Sweater…That Grandma Knit.

David Wiesner
David is well recognized for his genius in the wordless picture book format. He is only the second artist in the long history of the Caldecott Medal to have received the medal three times: in 1992 for Tuesday, in 2002 for The Three Pigs and in 2007 for Flotsam. He was also awarded the Caldecott Honor twice: in 1989 for Free Fall and in 1999 for Sector 7.

Kevin Henkes

Kevin not only received a Caldecott Honor for his book Owen, but he also received a Newbery Honor for his Olive’s Ocean. Other books include Sheila Rae the Brave, Wemberley Worried, Sheila Rae’s Peppermint Stick, My Garden and A Good Day. In 2005 he received the Caldecott Medal for Kitten’s First Full Moon.

Jan Brett Presentation and Signing

The first will take place on Thursday, Nov. 10, from 5-7 p.m. Location to be announced.  Jan Brett will be making a short presentation, followed by a book signing. This will be part of her new book tour highlighting her two newest books, Home for Christmas and The Night Before Christmas and book and DVD. Jan’s motor coach will be wrapped with images of her new books.  This will make for a wonderful photo opportunity.

Steven Kellogg and Anthony Edwards Presentation

On the evening of  Saturday, Nov. 12 at 7 p.m., there will be a presentation by Steven Kellogg and Anthony Edwards celebrating Kellogg’s life work and this tremendous gift. The event will take place in the Alumni Memorial Student Union Multipurpose Room.

New Steven Kellogg Artwork gifted by Anthony Edwards

The Mazza Museum also announces the acquisition of more than 2,700 pieces of original artwork by famed children’s book artist and author Steven Kellogg.

The acquisition was made possible, in part, by a $350,000 gift from actor Anthony Edwards.

The new artwork is from more than 114 books created by Kellogg during his lifetime, and we are deeply honored to be the repository for this wonderful body of work. We are also deeply appreciative of the generosity of Mr. Edwards and our other benefactors who have helped make this acquisition possible. We are humbled by this gift and plan to use the art in a way that will make them proud.

Some of Kellogg’s popular work includes, Island of the Skog, Johnny Appleseed, A Rose for Pinkerton, How Much is a Million and The Day Jimmy’s Boa Ate the Wash.
